Kawasan Falls

This is the last large river on the island, the flow rate being 432,00 cubic meters per day. Due to the indiscriminate cutting of the forest erosion has taken place, causing the drying up all the other rivers.

Kawasan Falls is a place that is popular with tourists and locals. A local bus or tricycle takes you to Matutinau, and from there it is a gentle walk through the forest. There are three stages to the falls, the first being the most spectacular. Here you can swim, if you are lucky you get nibbled by small fish! It is the water supply for the local area and is a sacred place. Nuns can sometimes be seen venturing out on the water on a raft to bless the flow! There is a Philippine style food and drink stand where local foods and drink can be bought. It is possible to follow the river to its source, where there is a large central pool with three smaller ones surrounding it. These gentle bubbly, it is a magical place.
